font making
calligraphr. handmade. rushed, childlike, no thoughts, emotional handwriting. end of exam handwriting.
creating a childlike handwritten font, a fun process which was equal parts fun, stressful, and technical. every font allows expression of unique personality and style, but also habits, the way you hold a pen, what colour you like using, rushed or very considered energy comes out too in writing . Using the font creation tool Calligraphr, i turned my handwritten lettering into a digital font that can be used for a variety of design projects.
In creating this font, i made a number of stylistic choices that contributed to its childlike and playful feel. Particularly the emphasis on roundness and curves of the letters, or added a touch of whimsy to certain characters with a fun , lopsided, disjointed melody to them. I chosen more instinctually to incorporate variations in line thickness to give the font a more organic, hand-drawn feel.
The font is one that to me conveys a little string of innocence, joy, and wonder. It was a much faster process than I anticipated, thankfully as my vision was simplistic by nature. I printed the templates out, whose what characters i wanted, and at first planned with soft pencil strokes. A sharpie was my tool, as this had a nice round, blunt nib, keeping the letters soft and squishy, carefree and always absentminded.
